Peanut butter and jelly sandwich helps teach kids lesson in precise communication With the help of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, tomorrow's student leaders learned a valuable lesson in precise communication Wednesday at a elementary school leadership conference in Chico. Rick Minniefield of Chico, a motivational speaker who often works with local students, asked a youngster from the student assembly to pretend he was on the telephone, and tell Minniefield how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Told to put the peanut butter and jelly on separate pieces of bread, Minniefield did as he was told and put the jars of peanut butter and jelly on slices of bread, drawing howls of delighted laughter from the students. A silly exercise, yes, but one that showed fourth , fifth and sixth graders through humor how people young and old alike can and do misunderstand each other. You have to make them realized they have to be leaders every single second of the day, not just when they feel like it, Minniefield said later. Elementary Leadership Conference 2001 brought together more than 350 students from Chico elementary schools for group meetings, spirit building activities and team building.

Student government leaders at Pleasant Valley and Chico high schools and Marsh and Bidwell Junior high schools put on the conference without much outside help. PV Junior, Molly Kendall said younger students learn skills that will help them become student leaders when they graduate to junior and senior high schools. Kids come here to get to know each other and break down barriers, Kendall said. We're about tolerance and getting along with each other and team building, PV Senior, Eric Campbell echoed. Kendall and Campbell had attended the elementary leadership conference when they were in junior high school and sixth grade. About 90 older students served as group leaders and facilitators during the conference.
