Student conference encourages right choices

Tioga High School students LaDonna Smith and Ashley Ray, along with nearly 1,000 other high schoolers acted against destructive decisions Friday.

Students from Louisiana and Mississippi are gathering at the Louisiana Conference Centre this weekend to participate in the 16th annual Louisiana Youth Conference.

Most in attendance are members of their school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions organization.

YOUNG PEOPLE LISTEN ATTENTLY TO RICK'S PRESENTATIONCol. James “Jim” Champagne, executive director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, commented on the efforts the youth put into assembling the conference.

“The best part is that the students receive information on issues that are affecting them,” Champagne said as school groups registered Friday.

Champagne noted that most students experience peer pressure, which was addressed by the conference’s Youth Advisory Council.

Topics such as drugs, alcohol and other destructive decisions will be discussed at the conference, which ends Sunday.

Robin Crumbly, 18, a Denham Springs High School senior, is a member of the Youth Advisory Council and understands the importance of the conferences to the students.

“It’s like a revival,” she said. “Every year, it gets more exciting.”

Crumby, the outgoing Student of the Year for the conference, has been a SADD member and has attended the conference for three years.

LaDonna Smith and Ashley Ray are attending the conference for the first time and are leaning on 15-year-old-schoolmate Mechelle Kirt for help.

“No matter what happens, someone will be touched by our work,” Minniefield said.

For 14-year-old Natalie Gosey, a Florien High School student, this is her first conference with the group. With little expectation, Natalie knows one thing: “I’m going to have a good time.”

The event’s master of ceremony, Rick Minniefield, warned the group that there will be some tough subjects that require serious attention this weekend. “No matter what happens, someone will be touched by our work,” Minniefield said.

Although the Kentwood High School group made a lot of noise, there was a serious message on their personally designed T-shirts: “No: Drugs, Alcohol, Violence, Sex, Disrespect.”
